There is something extraordinary about a community coming together at Christmas. A season of glowing windows, treasured traditions, and acts of kindness becomes even more meaningful when a little creativity can make a difference in someone’s life.
This holiday season, Gingerbread for Good returns for its third annual competition, inviting Greeneville’s most imaginative builders to trade their blueprints for gingerbread, their bricks for candy, and their creativity for a cause worth celebrating.
A Light in the Dark: The Heart Behind This Year’s Competition
Behind every gingerbread house is an opportunity to help a real household right here in Greene County.
This year’s beneficiary, My Neighbor’s House, serves families facing challenges that often go unseen. As Greene County’s official Long-Term Recovery Group, the organization helps residents affected by Hurricane Helene rebuild their lives and return to safe, stable homes.
Its mission also extends to the ALICE population, working individuals and families who earn above the federal poverty level but still struggle to afford essentials such as housing, transportation, childcare, healthcare, and food.
Inspired by these efforts, the 2026 theme, “A Light in the Dark,” challenges participants to imagine what hope looks like when brought to life in gingerbread. Perhaps it’s a warmly illuminated cottage, a village filled with welcoming windows, or a whimsical creation that tells a story of neighbors helping neighbors.
Every design offers a different way to celebrate the light that kindness brings into our community.
A Little Friendly Competition, a Lot of Christmas Creativity
Whether you’re an experienced gingerbread architect or simply someone who loves a good holiday project, there’s a place for you in this year’s competition.
Gather your coworkers, challenge your friends, bring the family together, or put your own decorating talents to the test. Businesses, organizations, churches, schools, community groups, and individual participants are all encouraged to join the festivities.
Prizes will be awarded in six competition categories:
- Business
- Team
- Individual, Ages 14 & Up
- Ages 11–13
- Ages 8–10
- Ages 5–7
Every Vote Helps a Neighbor.
The celebration doesn’t end when the final gumdrop is placed!
Completed gingerbread houses will become part of a festive community display, giving visitors an opportunity to admire the creativity, craftsmanship, and Christmas spirit behind each entry.
The public will also have a chance to support their favorite creations through $1 votes, with every dollar raised through voting going directly to My Neighbor’s House.
It’s a wonderful reminder that small contributions, much like individual lights in a darkened window, can create something remarkable when brought together.

Registration opens November 1 and closes November 30, 2026. Participants can register online, then stop by Sweeter Than Sweet to pick up their sponsor packs, filled with goodies to help bring their gingerbread creations to life. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot!
